Leading bravely against the bully

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

“Leadership” or to be a “leader” is a state of mind. It’s a title earned, not assigned and is often judged by the feedback of your teams and peers.

The qualities and behaviours of leadership are often associated with communication - vision, charisma, and strategic thinking. However, one trait that’s often overlooked, but is essential, is bravery. A brave leader possesses the courage to stand up against bullying behaviour and all forms of injustice and inequality. And a brave person who stands up against bullying is demonstrating leadership, no matter their relative position.

In this blog, Agencia Change explores the importance of bravery in leadership and how bravery empowers leaders to confront and address bullying behaviours.

We kindly urge individuals facing bullying to promptly report it to their manager or a human resources representative. Support resources are typically accessible through your workplace or privately, and we strongly encourage you to seek assistance.

Understanding Bullying Behaviour

Bullying can take many forms, such as verbal abuse, intimidating behaviour, exclusion, gaslighting, or harassment. It creates an environment of fear, undermines morale, and disrupts productivity. If unaddressed, bullying has severe consequences for individuals, teams and organisations. Many individuals struggle with bullying alone, not realising it could be an experience in common with other colleagues.

Suggested action as a leader: It’s your responsibility to encourage and foster a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

The Role of Bravery

Bravery is often associated with acts of physical valour, but in the context of leadership, it's also the willingness to face difficult situations and challenges head-on, even when it may be easier to turn a blind eye. It takes courage to recognise and acknowledge bullying behaviour, especially if it's happening within your own team. A brave leader understands the importance of taking a stand and is committed to creating a culture of respect and inclusiveness.

Suggested action as a leader: Identify the bullying behaviour, look out for patterns, or the catalyst - to understand why it's happening. Consider how you might approach having an open conversation to identify the impacts with tools and support.

Leading by Example

A brave leader sets the tone through their own actions and behaviour. By demonstrating zero tolerance for bullying, they send a powerful message. When leaders actively model respect, empathy, and kindness, it encourages others to follow suit. This creates an environment where bullying behaviour is less likely to thrive, and individuals feel safe to express themselves without fear of retribution.

Suggested action as a leader: Consider 360 degree feedback with your team, identify your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Consider what your team needs from you, and seek a mentor or coach (refer to Agencia Change - Grow Services) to help you build on your strengths.

Addressing Bullying Behaviour

When confronted with bullying behaviour, a brave leader takes swift and decisive action. This involves actively listening to victims, conducting thorough investigations, and providing support to those affected. By implementing clear policies and action to address bullying, leaders take a strong step towards eliminating unacceptable behaviours. They should also ensure that everyone within the organisation is aware of these policies and knows how to report incidents.

Suggested action as a leader: Work with your HR Business Partner for support, tools and resources. Consider training together or as a team to identify and manage the behaviours.

Promoting a Culture of Respect

To combat bullying behaviour effectively, a brave leader must promote a culture of respect and inclusiveness. This involves fostering open communication channels, encouraging feedback, and valuing diverse perspectives. By actively promoting teamwork, collaboration, and empathy, leaders create an environment where bullying behaviour cannot thrive. Recognising and rewarding positive behaviours also reinforces the importance of respect and encourages individuals to treat one another with kindness and dignity. Leading bravely against the bully means providing an accessible way to analyse team dynamics, and openly discussing how to improve team performance and productivity.

Suggested action as a leader: If you have a recognition program, notice, celebrate and encourage respectful behaviours within the team.

Conclusion

Leadership requires more than just intelligence and strategic thinking. A brave leader understands the importance of standing up against bullying behaviour and works diligently to create a culture of respect and inclusivity. By demonstrating bravery, addressing bullying, and fostering a supportive environment, leaders empower individuals and drive positive change within their organisations. Remember, it takes courage to be a leader, and it takes bravery to confront and eradicate bullying behaviour.
